Reiki’s History

With its origins in ancient Sanskrit text, Reiki was rediscovered in the 19th century by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese monk. The word Reiki is the combination of two Japanese characters: rei, meaning “universal spirit”; and ki, meaning “life force energy”—thus, “universal life force energy”.

Reiki is a non-invasive, stress-relieving technique that promotes the body’s relaxation response and natural healing ability by unblocking channels and balancing the body’s energy.

How does Reiki Work?

Through training and instruction, the Reiki practitioner learns to become a channel for the powerful life force that flows through all living beings on earth. During a Reiki treatment, the practitioner will lay hands on the client’s body in positions that correspond with the seven chakras, which in turn align with the body’s endocrine system.

The endocrine system receives or releases energetic impulses, balancing the body and promoting a sense of well-being.

How can Reiki Help Me?

Many of the body’s traumas (illness, inflammation, pain) are directly linked to anxiety and stress—literally, “dis-ease”. Reiki gently encourages a person’s system towards its own unique alignment—alleviating stress, and thereby promoting healing. It works as a complementary assist to both conventional and alternative medical treatments, bringing about quicker and more effective results.

Reiki is also beneficial as a preventative: Keeping the body balanced and stress free reduces the risk of illness.

Some benefits of Reiki include:

  • Releases anxiety and stress

  • Promotes natural self-healing

  • Treats chronic pain

  • Strengthens the immune system

  • Reduces inflammation

  • Clears toxins

  • Promotes a connection with the higher self

  • Beneficial for most pain and illnesses

  • Releases blocked energies and suppressed emotions

What Happens in a Reiki Treatment?

A typical Reiki session takes between 60 and 90 minutes; it is a relaxing, restful, and calming experience. In a soothing atmosphere, you will be seated or lay down fully clothed, without shoes or jewelry. Loose-fitting, comfortable clothing are suggested.

During the Reiki treatment, energy is channeled through the practitioner’s hands, which are placed on or above different areas of your body in a non-invasive manner. Many clients report experiences of warmth, deep relaxation, “lucid dreaming” (i.e., a conscious dream state), physical release from pain, tingling, floating, and energetic vibrations..

Energy can be neither created nor destroyed. The total amount of energy in the Universe is a constant. –Basic Law of Thermodynamics

Reiki distance healing is also available. It is the power of the channeled energy that heals the body, and time and space are no obstacle to the Reiki practitioner.

What is Reiki Lineage?

Reiki lineage is the succession of teachers who have come before a practitioner. It is important to know one’s lineage because the teaching and technique of Reiki must remain untainted and intact in order to be powerful.

A Direct Lineage Reiki practitioner is one who can trace their lineage directly back to the founder of Reiki, Dr. Mikao Usui. I am extremely grateful to have studied and trained under the guidance of Thea Annya Nathan, 12th in the direct lineage of Dr. Usui.
